All-natural cleaners are a must have in today's more chemically conscious movement. The first recipe I tried included rubbing alcohol as it is used a lot in the natural community. After spraying some in my bathroom my lungs were overcome with the harsh fumes. I quickly pulled out the computer to research the dangers associated with rubbing alcohol. It is not recommended to inhale rubbing alcohol fumes and now that I know that, I do not feel comfortable using it for anything other than small spot treatment jobs. Here is a document that talks about some of the hazards of inhaling rubbing alcohol.
My recipe is safe for your skin AND your lungs. Of course this isn't going to clean as easily as a chemical cleaner, but if you knew why those chemicals clean so well you might be more concerned about using them around humans. If there is a tougher job, I get creative, but this works for 99% of my daily household needs. To add some scrubbing power to this recipe, sprinkle some baking soda on the surface after you spray it and get to scrubbing! Being mindful, of course, of surfaces that could be damaged by the abrasive nature of baking soda.
Natural Cleaner Recipe for a 20-24 fl oz spray bottle:
-Fill half of the bottle with water
-Fill the other half of the bottle with white vinegar (dissolves soap scum and grease, has deodorizer and disinfectant properties)
-Add 10 drops of tea tree essential oil (has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties)
-Add 7 drops of lemon essential oil (has antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and deodorizer properties)
-Add 7 drops of lavender essential oil (has antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and deodorizer properties)
-Add 5 drops of peppermint essential oil (has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties)
And that's it! Just shake the bottle before you use it each time, spray, and wipe! It is incredibly quick to refill and is far cheaper than standard cleaners. The peace of mind that it gives me to use natural products in our home far outweighs the cost benefits. Just to add some extra beauty to my day, I put mine in a beautiful glass bottle with a label.
Bye for now!
